Envirotest Canada is contracted to provide vehicle emissions inspection services to residents of Greater Vancouver and the Lower Fraser Valley. Our highly trained employees conduct a variety of procedures designed to test vehicle emissions in a fast, efficient and affordable manner.

ASM / Idle (1991 and older)
1991 and older vehicles are tested using a dynamometer and five-gas analyzer. The test measures Hydrocarbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) while the vehicle is driven at a steady speed of approximately 40 km per hour, and at idle. The driving portion of the test may last up to 90 seconds depending on how clean the vehicle is in the early part of the test. The dynamometer simulates road testing by electronically applying load to vehicles to provide more accurate vehicle emissions readings.

I/M 240 (1992 to 1997)
1992 to 1997 are tested using the most advanced emissions test procedure currently in use. The test measures Hydrocarbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) while the vehicle is driven on a dynamometer (a sort of treadmill for cars) through a range of driving conditions (accelerations, decelerations, idle and cruise). The test may take up to 240 seconds depending on how clean vehicle is in the early part of the test.

D147
All diesel vehicles are tested under the most advanced driving opacity test currently in use. The opacity test measures smoke levels while the vehicle is driven on a dynamometer simulating normal driving conditions (accelerations, decelerations, idle
and cruise). The test may take up to 147 seconds depending on how clean the vehicle is in the early part of the test.

On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) (1998 and newer)
Eligible 1998 and newer vehicles will be subjected to a scan of their On-Board Diagnostic, or OBD, system. The OBD system continuously monitors the condition and operation of key emissions control systems and emissions-related equipment in the vehicle.

Gas Cap Pressure Test
Most vehicles receive a functional inspection of the gas cap to ensure that the pressurized gas cap seal is operating correctly. Gas caps that do not seal properly allow for fuel evaporation that releases harmful Hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. By ensuring that your gas cap is properly sealed, you also save money on fuel costs.

Catalytic Converter
1988 and newer model year vehicles receive a visual inspection of the catalytic converter. Converters are located before the muffler to burn off any excessive pollutants prior to being release in the air through the tailpipe.
Our role is to inspect vehicles for the three regulated emissions: hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
